Best AI app builder for beginners (2026): Lovable vs Bolt vs Replit and more

Updated 2026-10-17 · 10 min read

Verdict: For a first web app, start with Lovable: its Free plan gives 5 build credits a day (up to 30 a month) and Pro starts at $25/month. Pick Bolt.new if you want the most free usage measured in tokens (1M a month on Free) and plan to try a small browser game too. Pick Replit if you want to see and learn the code while the agent works, with hosting in the same place. Base44 is the cheapest paid entry ($16/month billed annually). Don't pay for anything until a free tier has stopped you. Making a game instead of an app? Go to the game dev guide.

What “beginner” means on this page

This page is for people building their first app with AI: you can describe what you want, but you can't yet write the code yourself, and you'd like to understand a bit more after every project. If you never want to touch code at all and just need a working tool for your business, the non-coder version of this guide weighs things differently. If you already code, the general AI app builder comparison adds developer tools such as Cursor and Claude Code.

We haven't run timed build tests ourselves. Everything below comes from each vendor's own pricing and documentation pages, checked on 2026-10-17 and linked inline, so you can check it yourself.

Who should pick which

  • You want a good-looking web app or landing page and nothing else: Lovable. Its docs describe one credit balance that covers building, chat, hosting and the built-in backend (Lovable Cloud). Lovable credits docs (opens in a new tab)
  • You want to experiment a lot for free: Bolt.new. Free gives 300K tokens a day and 1M a month, and includes hosting and unlimited databases, with Bolt branding on your site. Bolt.new pricing (opens in a new tab)
  • You want to learn to code along the way: Replit. You build in a full workspace where the code is always visible, and the Starter plan is free with no time limit. Replit plans docs (opens in a new tab)
  • You think in screens and React components: v0 by Vercel. Free includes Design Mode, GitHub sync and deploys to Vercel, with a 7-message-a-day limit. v0 pricing (opens in a new tab)
  • You want the lowest monthly bill once you pay: Base44 Starter is $16/month billed annually, with 100 message credits a month. Base44 pricing (opens in a new tab)
  • You want a phone app as well as a web app: Emergent's paid Standard plan lists “Build web & mobile apps”. Emergent pricing (opens in a new tab)

Free tiers compared

The free tier is where beginners actually decide, so here is exactly what each one gives you according to the vendor:

  • Lovable Free: 5 daily build credits, capped at 30 a month. Once you hit the cap the daily credits stop until the 1st of the next month, so in practice you get daily credits for the first six days you use it. Free also includes a daily chat allowance and small monthly Cloud (20 credits) and AI (4 credits) grants. You can't edit or download code on Free, but Git sync to GitHub, GitLab or Bitbucket is included. Lovable plans (opens in a new tab)
  • Bolt.new Free: 300K tokens a day, 1M a month, a 10MB file upload limit, website hosting with up to 333k web requests, and Bolt branding on your site. Bolt says most tokens go on syncing your project's files to the AI, so bigger projects use more tokens per message. Bolt.new pricing (opens in a new tab)
  • Replit Starter: a daily Agent allowance, limited monthly cloud credits, basic Agent access and one published app. Replit doesn't publish the exact numbers. Replit docs (opens in a new tab)
  • v0 Free: free access to v0, deploys to Vercel, Design Mode, GitHub sync and a 7-message-a-day limit. v0 pricing (opens in a new tab)
  • Base44 Free: 25 message credits and 100 integration credits a month, up to 5 apps, with authentication, database and analytics included. Base44 pricing (opens in a new tab)
  • Emergent Free: $0 with 10 free monthly credits, plus web and mobile building and one-click LLM integration. Emergent pricing (opens in a new tab)

What you'll pay when you upgrade

Prices are in USD per month, as listed on each vendor's page on 2026-10-17:

  • Lovable Pro: $25/month for 100 credits ($250/year), plus the 5 daily credits with no monthly cap. Unused monthly credits roll over, and top-ups cost $15 per 50 credits. Verified students and teachers get 50% off the 100-credit Pro plan for up to 12 months. Lovable plans (opens in a new tab)
  • Bolt.new Pro: $25/month, no daily token limit, from 10M tokens a month. Unused tokens roll over for one extra month, and it adds custom domains and removes the branding. Bolt.new pricing (opens in a new tab)
  • Replit Core: $20/month ($18 billed annually), with up to 30 hours of chat on Free Mode and $20 towards more powerful models. Pro is $100/month ($90 billed annually). Replit pricing (opens in a new tab)
  • v0: the paid tier is $30 per user per month and includes $30 of monthly credits plus $2 of free daily credits when you log in. Business is $100 per user per month. v0 pricing (opens in a new tab)
  • Base44: Starter $16, Builder $40, Pro $80 and Elite $160 a month, all billed annually. Base44 says yearly billing saves 20%. Base44 pricing (opens in a new tab)
  • Emergent: Standard $20/month ($17 billed annually) with 100 credits; Pro $200/month ($167 annually) with 750 credits. Emergent pricing (opens in a new tab)

Limits beginners run into

Almost every builder here charges by credits or tokens, and how much one prompt costs depends on how much work it causes. Lovable gives example Build-mode costs on its credits page, from 0.50 credits for “make the button gray” to 2.00 for “build a landing page with images”, and says Plan mode costs 1 credit per message. Lovable credits docs (opens in a new tab) Bolt says the larger your project, the more tokens each message uses. Bolt.new pricing (opens in a new tab) Practical tip: plan in chat first (it's cheaper on Lovable), then ask for one change per prompt. When you do run out, our “hit my limit” guide lists your options tool by tool.

Owning your code (so you're not stuck)

Beginners rarely think about this, but it decides whether you can move later. Lovable lets you edit and download code from Pro up, and offers Git sync on every plan. Lovable plans (opens in a new tab) Base44 says two-way GitHub sync exports the full source code, and lists the GitHub integration on Builder and above. Base44 pricing (opens in a new tab) v0 includes GitHub sync on Free. v0 pricing (opens in a new tab) Emergent lists GitHub integration from Standard. The gamer angle: can a beginner build a game in these?

These are web app builders first. Bolt is the one we'd point a curious gamer at for a quick browser game, because the free token allowance is large and it hosts the result for you. If games are the main goal, Rosebud AI is built for that: its pricing page lists credit costs for sprites, sounds, 3D models and skyboxes, and its Free plan starts at 8,000 credits that refill weekly in eligible regions. A 30-minute test you can run yourself

  1. Write one short brief, for example: “a habit tracker with sign-in, a list of habits and a weekly streak chart”.
  2. Paste the same brief into the free tier of two or three tools from the table.
  3. Ask each for the same two changes (a new field, then a colour change) and note how many credits or tokens each used. Most of these tools show this in the editor.
  4. Keep the tool whose result you understand best, not just the one that looks best.

Or skip the homework and take the 3-question picker. It gives you a main pick and a backup for days you hit a limit.

FAQ

What is the easiest AI app builder for a complete beginner?

Lovable and Bolt.new are both built around describing an app in plain English and getting a hosted result. Lovable's Free plan gives 5 build credits a day (max 30 a month); Bolt's Free plan gives 300K tokens a day and 1M a month. Try both with the same short brief.

Can I build an app with AI for free?

Yes, within limits. Lovable, Bolt.new, Replit (Starter), v0, Base44 and Emergent all have a free plan. The free plans cap usage by credits, tokens or messages, and some add branding (Bolt Free puts Bolt branding on websites).

Which AI app builder is cheapest?

Among paid plans checked on 2026-10-17, Base44 Starter is $16/month billed annually. Replit Core is $20/month ($18 annually), Emergent Standard $20 ($17 annually), and Lovable Pro and Bolt Pro are both $25/month.

Will I own the code?

Usually, but check the plan. Lovable allows editing and downloading code from Pro and Git sync on all plans; Base44 offers two-way GitHub sync from Builder; v0 has GitHub sync on Free.
