Updated 2026-10-17 · 8 min read

Verdict: If you already pay for Claude Code or Codex, install Unity's free official plugin. It bundles Unity-written skills, the Unity CLI and the MCP server, and uses no Unity credits. Using another agent, such as Cursor, Copilot or Antigravity? Connect it with the free MCP server through the Unity CLI. Want an assistant inside the Editor that understands your scene? Unity's in-editor assistant is included with Pro, Enterprise and Industry, or costs $10/month after a trial on Personal. All of it requires Unity 6 or later.

Unity's AI tools, as Unity describes them

Unity has retired the “Unity AI” name and now describes each tool by what it does (checked 2026-10-17): Unity's AI tools (unity.com) (opens in a new tab)

  • In-editor assistant: project-aware, inspects GameObjects and components, drives Editor actions and verifies changes, with several models to choose from. Uses Unity AI credits.
  • AI gateway: connects a verified third-party agent you already subscribe to, bypassing Unity's agent and credit system.
  • MCP server through CLI: lets an external agent operate the Editor from your IDE. Free, with no concurrency limits, and no Unity credits needed.
  • Unity CLI: install the Editor, create and open projects, and use MCP Mode from the terminal. Free.
  • Official plugin for Claude Code, Codex and Grok: Unity-maintained engineering skills plus the CLI and MCP server in one install. Free.

Everything requires Unity 6.0 or later and is installed as a package. Nothing is on by default. Unity says these tools are in beta.

What the official plugin's skills cover

According to Unity, the skills cover getting started and tooling; UI (UI Toolkit, uGUI, IMGUI, TextMeshPro); 2D and sprites; graphics and rendering (URP, Shader Graph); audio, including Vivox; scene and gameplay (AI Navigation, 3D physics); monetisation and live ops (IAP, LevelPlay); multiplayer; and platform and localisation. Unity's AI tools (unity.com) (opens in a new tab) This is the main reason to prefer the plugin over a bare MCP connection: the agent gets Unity's conventions instead of guessing at them.

Which agent to pair with Unity

Unity lists its expanding set of plugin-supported agents in its plugin documentation, so check there if your agent isn't named above. Picking a single subscription? See which ONE AI coding subscription to buy.

Who should pick which

  • Unity Pro, Enterprise or Industry seat: try the in-editor assistant first, since it's already part of your subscription.
  • Unity Personal, already paying for Claude or ChatGPT: official plugin plus Claude Code or Codex. No Unity credits needed.
  • Unity Personal, $0 budget: MCP server plus Antigravity, or Copilot Free for completions.
  • Beginner following a tutorial: the in-editor assistant (on a trial) is the least setup. Its answers are grounded in your open scene.

Costs and limits

  • In-editor assistant: included in Pro, Enterprise and Industry. On Personal, a free trial converts to a $10/month subscription. You can see your credits in the Unity Dashboard under Manage Credits, and buy more there. Unity's AI tools (unity.com) (opens in a new tab) Unity's features page doesn't state the trial length or credit amounts, so check Unity's pricing page.
  • MCP server, CLI and plugin: free, with no concurrency limits.
  • AI gateway: doesn't use Unity credits. Your third-party agent's own limits apply.
  • Your agent's limits: big Unity projects mean big contexts. Keep MCP servers you don't need switched off. OpenAI notes that every MCP server adds context and uses more of your limit. Codex pricing (OpenAI) (opens in a new tab) See hit my usage limit.

Assets, data and licences

Unity says assets generated by the in-editor assistant carry embedded metadata marking them as AI-generated, and that you're responsible for app-store declarations and usage rights. You can turn the generators off in the dashboard while keeping the assistant. By default, user data isn't used to train AI models. Unity Muse is deprecated, and these tools use third-party models. Unity's AI tools (unity.com) (opens in a new tab) For 3D, 2D and audio generators outside Unity, see the asset table in the game dev guide.

A first Unity AI workflow

  1. Upgrade a copy of your project to Unity 6 or later, and commit it to Git.
  2. Install the official plugin for your agent, or the Unity CLI with MCP Mode.
  3. Ask the agent to inspect the scene and explain the existing scripts before changing anything.
  4. Request one feature at a time, for example “add a jump with coyote time to PlayerController”, and test in Play mode after each one.
