Claude Code vs OpenAI Codex in 2026: which coding agent fits you?

Updated 2026-10-17 · 6 min read

Verdict: Both start at $20/month (Claude Pro or ChatGPT Plus), so the deciding question is usually which chat subscription you'd keep anyway. Pick Codex if you want cloud tasks, GitHub code review and Slack built into the plan, a free way to try it (Free and Go, subject to rollout), or published message estimates per model. Pick Claude Code if you live in the terminal or in VS Code, Cursor or JetBrains and want one pool shared with Claude chat. You can top it up with usage credits at API rates. Heavy users: OpenAI says Codex Pro plans currently have no five-hour limit.

Limits: how far $20 goes

Claude Code: Claude's Pro and Max plans both have a five-hour session limit plus a weekly limit, and they're shared between Claude chat and Claude Code. Claude Code with Pro/Max (Claude Help Center) (opens in a new tab) Anthropic says Pro gives at least 5× the per-session usage of Free, and Max gives 5× or 20× Pro. It doesn't publish fixed message counts. Claude pricing (opens in a new tab) If you hit the five-hour limit partway through a response, Claude Code may keep going briefly to finish the step (“wrapping up”). On Pro this happens at most once per weekly period, and it's still rolling out. Claude Help Center (opens in a new tab)

Codex: OpenAI estimates 15–160 local messages per five hours on GPT-6.1 Sol for Plus, and 350–3,000 on GPT-6 Luna. Weekly limits may also apply, and these are estimates, not fixed caps. Codex pricing (OpenAI) (opens in a new tab) Cloud tasks may use more of your allowance than local messages, and every MCP server you connect adds context to each message.

In short: Codex publishes estimated ranges per model, while Claude describes multiples of other plans. Neither number is a guarantee, so check /status in either tool while you work.

Going past the limit without surprises

  • Claude Code: you can enable usage credits, which are billed at standard API rates, or switch to a Console account. One gotcha: if an ANTHROPIC_API_KEY environment variable is set, Claude Code uses it instead of your subscription, and you're billed API charges. Max plans include monthly API credits, but Anthropic says those can't be used in Claude Code. Claude Help Center (opens in a new tab)
  • Codex: Plus and Pro users can buy more credits without upgrading, or run extra local chats on an API key at standard API rates. Fast and Ultrafast modes use your allowance at 2.5× and 8× the Standard rate. Codex pricing (OpenAI) (opens in a new tab)
