Claude Code pricing explained (2026): Pro, Max, limits and API billing

Updated 2026-10-17 · 5 min read

Short answer: Claude Code comes with any paid Claude plan. Pro is $20/month ($17/month billed annually, $200 up front), and Max is from $100/month with 5× or 20× Pro's usage per session. It is not on the Free plan. Usage is shared with Claude chat and limited by a rolling five-hour session plus a weekly limit. Past that you can wait, upgrade, or pay standard API rates with usage credits. Watch out for an ANTHROPIC_API_KEY environment variable: if it's set, Claude Code bills the API instead of your plan.

Max also includes monthly API credits for building on the Claude Platform ($100 a month on Max 5× and $200 on Max 20×, per the comparison table). Anthropic says these can't be used in Claude Code. Claude Help Center (opens in a new tab)

How the limits work

  • Five-hour session window: limits reset on a rolling five-hour window. Paid plans also have a weekly limit. Claude pricing (opens in a new tab)
  • One shared pool: Claude on web, desktop and mobile, Claude Code in the terminal and in IDEs (VS Code, Cursor and other forks, JetBrains) all draw from the same limits.
  • No fixed message count: how far it goes depends on conversation length, the model and the features you use.
  • Fable: Max has a separate weekly limit for the Fable model. On Pro, Fable runs on usage credits. Claude Help Center (opens in a new tab)
  • Wrap-up allowance: if you hit the five-hour limit mid-response, Claude Code may finish the step in progress. You'll see “Usage limit reached · wrapping up”. On Pro this happens at most once per weekly period, on Max at each five-hour limit. It's rolling out gradually.

Check where you stand with /status in Claude Code or under Settings › Usage.

When you hit the limit

  1. Wait for the reset.
  2. Turn on usage credits (paid plans), billed at standard API rates.
  3. Switch to a Claude Console account and buy API credits for heavy sprints. Auto-reload is a Console setting, so check it there.
  4. Upgrade: Pro to Max 5×, or Max 5× to Max 20×.

To stay strictly within your plan, decline the API credit option. Or log out and log in with only your Pro or Max credentials, and the option won't appear. Claude Help Center (opens in a new tab)

The API-key gotcha

If an ANTHROPIC_API_KEY environment variable is set on your machine, Claude Code uses that key instead of your subscription. You get API charges rather than your plan's included usage. Which plan should you buy?

  • A few sessions a week: Pro. Pay annually if you're sure, since annual is $17/month.
  • You hit Pro's five-hour limit most days: Max 5× (from $100).
  • Occasional heavy sprints: stay on Pro and turn on usage credits with a budget in mind.
  • Automation or CI: an API key on a Console account, billed per token.

The gamer angle

Claude Code is on Roblox Studio's MCP quick-connect list Roblox MCP docs (opens in a new tab), and Unity publishes an official plugin for it Unity's AI tools (unity.com) (opens in a new tab). Game sessions with long scripts and big scenes use more of the five-hour window. Keep tasks small and commit often. See how to make a game with AI, or take the 3-question picker.

FAQ

Is Claude Code free?

No. Claude's pricing page lists Claude Code on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise but not on the Free plan (checked 2026-10-17).

How much is Claude Code?

It comes with Claude Pro at $20/month ($17/month billed annually) or Max from $100/month. Enterprise is $20 per seat plus usage at API rates.

What's the difference between Claude Pro and Max for Claude Code?

Max gives you a choice of 5x or 20x Pro's usage per five-hour session, higher output limits and priority access at busy times. Both have weekly limits.

Can I use Max's API credits in Claude Code?

No. Anthropic says the monthly API credits included with Max can't be used in Claude Code or the Claude apps.

Why was I charged API fees for Claude Code?

Usually because usage credits were enabled or an ANTHROPIC_API_KEY environment variable was set, which makes Claude Code bill the API instead of your plan.
